Day one of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft only brought one selection from the state of Oregon — Michael Conforto was drafted with the 10th overall pick by the New York Mets. On day two, several Beavers and Ducks had their names called.
Jace Fry, the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, was selected with the third pick in the third round (77th overall) by the Chicago White Sox. Fry ended his junior season with an 11-2 record and 1.80 earned run average. He had four shutouts, including a no-hitter against Northern Illinois. Fry struck out 98 batters in 120 1/3 innings.
Dylan Davis was drafted ten picks later, 87th overall, by the San Francisco Giants. Davis finished 2014 with a team-leading 64 RBI, which was also tops in the Pac-12. The junior had a .283 average with seven home runs and 14 doubles. His 48 career doubles ranks second all-time in Beaver history.
The first Duck taken in this year’s draft was closer Jake Reed, selected with the 140th overall pick in the fifth round by the Minnesota Twins. The California native finished 2014 with a 4-1 record to go along with a 1.95 ERA. Reed recorded 13 saves for Oregon and struck out 34 batters in 37 innings.
Oregon’s Friday night ace, Tommy Thorpe, was drafted in the eighth round with the 229th overall pick by the Chicago Cubs. Like Reed, Thorpe just completed an all-conference campaign for Oregon, compiling an 11-4 record with a 2.14 ERA.
After a roller coaster calendar year, Ben Wetzler was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the ninth round with the 257th overall pick. Wetzler was taken in the fifth round in 2013 by the Marlins, but chose not to sign, which ultimately led to Wetzler being suspended for 11 games by the NCAA. Wetzler finished his senior year with an 11-2 record and a nation-leading 0.78 ERA. Wetzler is the all-time wins leader at Oregon State with 36.
The fifth Beaver to be drafted was versatile pitcher Scott Schultz. The closer turned starter turned closer went 300th overall in the 10th round to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Schultz was drafted in the 17th round last year by Miami. The senior went 7-2 with a 1.61 ERA in 2014. In the final outing of his OSU career, Schultz tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout of UC-Irvine in the Corvallis Regional final.
On day three, the first Beaver or Duck selected was Oregon outfielder Scott Heineman, who went in the 19th round with the 573rd overall pick to the Kansas City Royals. Heineman entered the 2014 season as the Ducks best draft prospect, but was limited to eight games after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum.
Duck left-handed pitcher Porter Clayton was drafted in the 21st round by the New York Yankees. Clayton compiled a 2-1 record and 4.46 ERA in 20 appearances in 2014. Right-hander Brando Tessar was drafted in the 25th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tessar appeared in 14 games, starting 10, going 4-2 with a 4.26 ERA.
In the 27th round, the Seattle Mariners drafted Oregon State second baseman Andy Peterson. The La Palma, Calif. native finished a two-year OSU career with a .289 batting average in 119 games. Peterson was profiled by KEZI 9 Sports in May.
Two more Oregon State players were selected in the 39th round: senior infielder Kavin Keyes and draft-eligible sophomore Jeff Hendrix. Keyes went to the Seattle Mariners, and Hendrix was taken by the Kansas City Royals.
In all, eight Beavers and five Ducks were selected in the 2014 MLB Draft. Nine Oregon State signees and eight Oregon signees were also taken. The deadline for selected players to sign with major league teams is July 18, 2014.
